Ah, your intention is to call finger from a script which may be used
in other UNIX variants?

Well, perhaps you can use the environment variable in the script
explicitly (rathar than processing the environment in finger command).
The reason I thought this is because I do not prefer per-commond 
environment variable (it always reminds me MS-DOS ;)), but I don't
have strong opinion about this.

BTW, does `pg' have a per-command environment variable?
I cannot find such option in Solaris8 man page.
