Figured out the problem this morning.  It seems that the SNDCTL_DSP_SETFMT
and SNDCTL_DSP_CHANNELS ioctls on /dev/sound must be set explicitly.  At
least for SNDCTL_DSP_SETFMT, NetBSD assumes something other than AFMT_U8,
thus the scratches and pops.

Now I'm trying to figure out why the mixer doesn't want to allow itself to
be set.
