and how, exactly, does the use of /etc/default with *.conf files
conflict with (say) solaris' use of /etc/default? the directory name
is shared, but the file names are sufficiently different...

because the idea is to source the `default' in all the time and just
override what you want, and /usr isn't available at boot time on all
systems.
