Hmm, perhaps unsigned int would be better.  With the changes to libcurses,
it should be reasonably straighforward to support the wide character
functions.  However, I'd like to get the extra functionality for `normal'
characters out of the way first.  And, I think there needs to be a
consensus on how to handle wide characters generally.
