That's why Klaus has been working on making libc threadsafe, so we can 
drop in a real threading engine and dump dealing with mit pthreads or
any facimile thereof. I was planning on personally putting more work
in on this after the 1.4 release is complete.

There is a better userland pthreads package that just got submitted
for inclusion in pkgsrc, btw.
