How about just adding syslogd_flags="-s -p /var/run/log -p /dev/log"
to rc.conf for the duration of the 1.4 release? (Read-only root users
could just remove it from rc.conf or syslogd could be changed to be
happy if just one or more of the specified log sockets could be created.)
