Aha.  I _wondered_ what was going wrong there.

Sounds like what I suggested.  I sent mail to bug-gcc about this,
offering to do the work if there was a decent chance it would make it
back into the gcc distribution (it would be a lot of work, and I'm not
fond of wasting large amounts of effort).  To date I have heard nothing
at all in reply.
