That's exactly what I suspect is happening -- however it should not be the case 
(I verified with a scope that there in fact is data going over the 
(RS232-)wire).
(Of course, i can't rule out the possibility that I'm interfacing the serial 
port (-USB-dongle-thingy) the wrong way, termios can be quite confusing)
