For quick hacks and trials no, and for mosters like the thumb build
script MKCONF would propably be good idea.

Why I've not gone the MKCONF way already? 

It's not mentioned in share/mk/bsd.README, build.sh or top level makefiles.
The NetBSD Guide mentions it, but it always seemed more like a native
NetBSD thing than a tool for complicated cross builds.
