I'm not sure either. It's a step backward indeed.
But considering the limited time left to get something working into
the 2.0 branch I thought it is a good idea to do something we can pull
into the release in the case the dwarf stuff doesn't get fixed.
Since all flavours of debug information can still be created using
a command line switch, it shouldn't be much in the way of tracking
down the dwarf proplem.
