Tru64 5.1 and IRIX 6.5.20 sed returns a null string too, GNU sed version
3.02 from the IRIX FreeWare returns "2.13.2.1". 

Solaris8? Did you cross build the hp700 stuff on a UltraSPARC machine or
did you just test sed on Solaris? I would like to use a Ultra5 runing
NetBSD/sparc64 as build host for the hp700 port. But I am not sure if
crossing the 64 bit <=> 32 bit boundary works with GCC 3.x. I had some
strange problems (read: compiler bugs) when building 32 bit binaries on
64 machines with GCC 2.95.
