You should get the latest pax/tar (i.e. from today) because it was
quite brutally broken wrt empty archives in the past few days (could
even result in you nuking your own data).

(to be exact, tar -rf <emptyarchive> were broken and from the day
before yesterday until yesterday tar -rf was broken in general)

If the problem persists then, a better description of what's going
wrong surely would be helpful :)
