   Yah, I think that's MOSTLY intended for direct invocations of make(1).
   Really, I don't think they have much meaning for build.sh, since, I mean,
   that script has flags to set them.


i think that changing build.sh to not use them from the
environment is a mistake and will cause users confusion.
