This was caused by my having tried to build and install src/gnu/dist/bfd
(which src/gnu/dist/gas.new wants installed before it will build) by hand.

If the build process is going to be so finicky about having already
run configure somewhere, then it needs to clean up these files
before it tries to configure the tree, imho.
