Actually, that reminds me...

why do we bother with the extra dash?  At least for the targets i've
tried (OK, that's only mips{,el}-* recentely), the GNU tools tend to
be happy enough without explicitly providing space for the omitted
vendor name...

mips-netbsd to me is ... a fair bit more sane than mips--netbsd.  8-)
