there's also the issue of our ld.elf_so being possibly buggy, as forwarded
here a couple of weeks ago from the binutils list.  i don't know the details
myself, but it has to do with not wasting ~1/2kb in binaries, and apparently
ld-current will not work with our ld.elf_so.
