I guess I missed this, or else it is obvious to others: what prompted
the in-progress move from a.out to ELF for several ports recently?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, and I'm quite happy about it (or
at least don't care either way :-) but I would be interested to know
why.

Was it because ELF is superior?  Better tools support?  Something
else?
