Mmm, data misalignments. And not in the way I originally programmed it to
be (which was wrong). It's fixed in the current sources of
dist/bfd/archive.c (rev 1.4), which aligns the file data properly in the ar
files. Recompile libbfd (the ar binary should be fine) and it should work
now.
