building binutils-2.9 on NetBSD/alpha with 
./configure --target=alpha-*-netbsd
produces a an broken 'ld' after all.
With the new ld installed, 'ld -v' gives:
'GNU ld version 2.9 with (BFD 2.9)
 ld: built in linker script:5: parse error'
