Were the Symmetry machines genuinely NUMA? Did Dynix (or whatever OS they
ran at the time) actually have provision for handling that differently from
UMA SMP?

The earliest commercial NUMA I was aware of was from Data General who just
pipped SGI and Sequent to launching a 64-processor NUMA sometime around
97/98.
