From the first glance I guess it might be a bug and the ?? part
should in fact go in LOWER_OPSYS_VERSION/VERSUFFIX. On my systems,
LOWER_OPSYS contains osf5.1 resp. hpux11.11, which I have thought to be
awkward in the past. I'll try to fix it.
