I've decided to not dwell too deeply in the current bulk build code.
Joerg is working on a new bulk build system that (as I understand it)
won't suffer from these problems. Getting bulk to run on Tru64 was
fairly straightforward. I haven't done any testing on HP-UX yet due to
lack of time.
