#1 I left around in case something other than thunderbird or firefox 
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH then invoked acroread but yes it only helps 
acroread.

I believe the thunderbird/firefox problems started with this commit:

Dan McMahill fixing a problem on Solaris.  Think we need to not do 
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH bit on NetBSD and possibly other systems that run 
binary emulations and have the issues with mixing LD_LIBRARY_PATH's.
