The error was caused because instead of keeping old 
BUILDLINK_RECOMMENDED.$foo and BUILDLINK_DEPENDS.$foo supported, I changed 
to BUILDLINK_API_DEPENDS.$foo and BUILDLINK_ABI_DEPENDS.$foo. I thought 
about keeping support around for old code too by keeping all the old 
variables in place, but that would mean twice as much work :)

You can try reverting those in the buildlink.mk files. (Sorry I don't have 
time to also follow pkgsrc-stable and to test this. Maybe someone else 
can.)
