tech-pkg: making modifications to source files included with pkgsrc?

I would like to make modifications (in support of IRIX 5) to net/ 
tnftp and archivers/pax both whose source files are directly included  
with pkgsrc. Can I directly modify these files in pkgsrc, or would  
this break importing/synchronizing these files from elsewhere?
