Sorry but my previous email was truncated, more information about my system
diff and patch version:
diff (GNU diffutils) 2.8.1
Patch version 2.0, patch level 12u8

# uname -a
NetBSD venus 3.0_BETA NetBSD 3.0_BETA (VENUS) #0: Fri Sep 23 20:19:55
CEST 2005  root@venus:/usr/obj/sys/arch/i386/compile/VENUS i386

Step used to upgrade NetBSD:

# ./build.sh -T /usr/obj/tools -O /usr/obj tools
# ./build.sh -u -T /usr/obj/tools -O /usr/obj distribution
# ./build.sh -u -T /usr/obj/tools -O /usr/obj kernel=3DVENUS
# mv /netbsd /netbsd.old
# cp /usr/obj/sys/arch/i386/compile/VENUS/netbsd /netbsd
# shutdown -r now
# ./build.sh -u -T /usr/obj/tools -O /usr/obj install=3D/
# etcupdate -s /usr/src/etc
# shutdown -r now
