This was solved.

Yes, I was using pkgsrc-2005Q2.  However it came from the pkgsrc.tar.gz
tarball that was updated with -r.  The problem is the machine I  
updated it
on doesn't have my .cvsrc as such I was missing -d during the update.

I think you can figure out where this is going.  The reason ../../ 
lang/perl58
wasn't found was because it didn't exist in the tarball, I'm silly  
for assuming
it did.
