tech-pkg: how to show BUILDLINK3 variables? and builtin.mk not used

How can I display various BUILDLINK3 variables?

I tried:

bmake PKG_PHASE=wrapper show-var VARNAME=BUILDLINK_BUILTIN_MK.iconv

But received no output while in pkgsrc/x11/xearth.

As far as I can tell the converters/libiconv/builtin.mk is never included.

Can someone show me how I can display the value of
BUILDLINK_BUILTIN_MK.iconv ??
