Hmm. Actually I hadn't tried it. I was misled by the afpd manpage...

... After reading this, I promptly did a "pkg_info -B netatalk" and 
didn't see any "--with-message-dir".

Perhaps all that is needed is to update the manpage to remove the 
warning, and as you suggest, to create the "msg" subdirectory.
