firstly:
su% pkg_info |grep xml
xmlcatmgr-2.2       XML and SGML catalog manager
libxml2-2.6.17      XML parser library from the GNOME project
docbook-xml-4.2nb6  XML DTD designed for computer documentation
su%

so it looks like one is installed at least.

if i do:
su# pwd
/usr/pkg/lib
su#
su# ln -s libxml2.so.2.6.17 libxml2.so.8
su# ls -al | grep xml
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel  1181412 Feb 22 11:01 libxml2.a
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel      868 Feb 22 11:01 libxml2.la
lrwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel       17 Feb 22 11:01 libxml2.so -> libxml2.so.2.6.17

then I get:
su% gnumeric
Shared object "libgtk-x11-2.0.so.400" not found
su%

It finds the xml ok but,
it doesn't find another one.

So since I have built and installed firefox the old gnumeric
couldn't find libs and now the new one can't either.

Something is very wrong.

Any ideas?
