Is there an option to turn off the compiler wrapper?

I want to try getting arts and kdelibs3 to build under Linux by not using
the compiler wrapper. I don't understand (yet) all the "(cmd-sink-libtool)
pop:" and "(logic) push:" et cetera in the .work.log.

I do want to use the buildlinking so that correct dependencies are used.
