my initial investigation into this found that the IMAKE variable was
losing the arguments (which seems to be true from what you've pasted
above). I don't know why this is happening and I ran out of time when
I was looking at it, admittedly very quickly.

sorry, I know that's not particularly insightful, except to say that
you're not the only one.
