I've done just this, by introducing a variable ${ECHO_N} and setting it
appropriately in the defs.* files.

I can't vouch for any other OS at the moment, so I set all non-Interix OS's
to make this "${ECHO} -n".  Maintainers of other defs.* files may wish to
change this.
