Sed seems simpler:

	PID=$$$$ && \
	sed -e 's,//.*$$,,' < $< > tmp$${PID}.c && \
	${CC} ${CFLAGS} -c tmp$${PID}.c && \
	mv tmp$${PID}.o $@ && \
	rm -f tmp$${PID}.c)

I would have used /dev/stdin, but some cc's check that the file ends in .c
