Frederick Bruckman's pkg_hack does that. (Search for that at NetBSD
  search.)

Thanks for the pointer - I'll try that.  But what I would really like
is for 'make replace' to just do this as a matter of course, which I
suppose is the same as suggesting that pkg_hack be integrated into
pkgsrc and be the default make replace behavior.
