To add to others ...

I use pkgsrc on several systems for everything.

For example, I install with any boot cd, run fdisk, mkfs, mount, untar
glibc, linux-kernel, pkg_install (I allow it to be packaged), and a few
other packages. Chroot to the new partition and run pkg_add for some more
packages, like rc.subr, rcorder, lilo, sysvinit, etc. Then run lilo.
Reboot into new system.
