A contrary datapoint:

I just updated pkgsrc yesterday (via cvsup, so a bit behind), and did
'make update' in libiconv (yet another shlib major version bump in a
package that everything depends on, grr).  About 50 or 60 packages got
rebuilt, including gtk/gnome, mozilla, galeon, and some glib2/gnome2
sorts of things.  All this finished without a hitch.

The system was almost 1.6.1-release/i386.
