and confirm that

./bmake/boot-strap

builds ok for you.  
FWIW, I've done so on NetBSD, FreeBSD, Linux and SunOS.

Note the new version of bmake will report something like:

$ bmake -V MAKE_VERSION
bmake-20030714 build-20030714
$

The first date, is the version of bmake the 2nd is the build date.
