after removing ~/.kde i get farther, but still no luck.

the first time after removing ~/.kde, kde locked up right after the configuration utility ran.  i got one of the pthread assertion !=0 errors (sorry!! i didn't write down the exact message, if anyone wants it, let me know, i'll try and repeat the error)

after getting out of kde by killing X with ctl-alt-bksp, kde restarted without mishap.

however, now konqueror crashes immediately after opening, this time without any error message.  it just flashes on the screen and quits.

kmail, on the other hand apparently kills the whole K bar (it eventually restarts). i still have to ctl-alt-bksp to get out of kde.  the logout just hangs

one step forward, two steps back :-/
