Yes, actually I think there is. And the reason is, in short, "bugs".

From my rather limited experience, Linux libraries seem to be
extremely buggy. And the number of bugs do not even decrease between
releases, they just transform into different bugs... ;-)

For example, I am currently having problems displaying 8-bit Swedish
characters in Windows created by the sun-jre Linux JVM, they just
appear as empty boxes. If I switch back from suse-7.3 to suse-6.4
libraries, without changing anything else, everything works as it
should.
