This is always a very sensible thing to do, with the caveat that this
really only applies if MAINTAINER != "packages@netbsd.org".  In the
particular case of ghostscript, I think I've done quite a lot of work
as the maintainer, and so the expectation is that I would likely be
working on an upgrade.
