Ever since I became a beta-tester for emacs-21 I've simply installed it
(by hand) in /usr/local and kept the original pkg installed in /usr/pkg.
I suspect though that one would have to do some hacking on the pkg_*
tools in order to be able to cleanly install multiple variants of
conflicting packages in separate PREFIXes (probably to the extent of
having separate /var/db/pkg directories for each PREFIX).
