As I found out the hard way while hacking pkg Makefiles to build with
Zoularis/Sparc, many configure scripts are pretty "airtight" in that they
unconditionally set shell variables. The notes I've taken are at the bottom
of a huge pile of paper on my desk, so no access now.  ;)
