	this is not universally usable however - for example, we cannot use
	this technique for 9.2.0rc1 - it must be numbered like 9.1.99.1 or
	9.1.x.1 (where x is the largest possible existing version)
	also, if the original distribution decides to have "real" 4-digit
	versions like 9.1.1.5, we will be in trouble.
