following work's ok for me now (NetBSD 1.4.1)..

dev# cat /etc/mk.conf
# to get distfiles from localhost having anonymous ftpd. ..
MASTER_SITE_OVERRIDE=     ftp://localhost/pub/NetBSD/packages/distfiles/
#DISTDIR=/opt/ftp/pub/NetBSD/packages/distfiles:/usr/pkgsrc/distfiles
# i don't see DISTDIR doing ln -s in /usr/pkgsrc/distfiles yet.

i do get an extra copy of the distfile in /usr/pkgsrc/distfiles,
but that's ok w/ me.
