Right - I had meant this as an alternative to the MASTER_SITE_LOCAL, or
MASTER_SITE_GNU, or MASTER_SITE_X11 selections, not as a fully-fledged site
ordering.

Hmmmm.

Looks like a regular expression is definitely needed.

  The advantage of this proposal is that this also works nicely for URLs
like 'ftp.netbsd.org' that do not explicitly contain the country the
download site is situated in.  On the downside, however, this means that
*all* packages have to be modified to explicitely contain the various
MASTER_SITE_XX definitions for their mirror sites!?
