Um... so instead of extracting the files to a staging area, you extract
the archive with the files to a staging area, then extract that archive in
/ (or whereever)? Gaining space mostly by not extracting the (compressed)
binary package's files to the staging area, but extracting the still
compressed archive with the files to the staging area? 

This wasn't clear in your proposal, please explain. :)
