Subject: Proper use of .../NetBSD-current/tar_files/pkgsrc.tar.gz

Up until last week I was keeping my /usr/pkgsrc up to date using
NetBSD-current's pkgsrc.tar.gz. It wasn't until the recent changes
(bsd.own.mk) and the small bug ( ... || ${TRUE} in shared a.out libs ) that it
dawned on me that for a 1.3.3 system, this might not be a Good Thing.
Is there an official mechanism to keep a released system's /usr/pkgsrc current
(with respect to included packages, not NetBSD-current)?
I browsed through mail-index.netbsd.org but didn't see much on the topic.
Pointers to past discussions welcome.
