A joke yes?  Firstly in many parts of the world <4G = >$400 but that's
not important.  

While the days of truely diskless machines may be gone
it is still far less work to maintain 100+ workstations if _all_ they
have on their local disk is / and swap and they share everything 
that's is shareable on a big server with mirrored/stripped disks.

Aside from the time you save upgrading s/w, dealing with the inevitable
disk failures is also simpler.
