In this case, you're not really measuring metadata handling speed, since
you are only reading already created files; you're not creating or
removing them.

This means that the difference you're seeing between, for example,
FreeBSD 4.3 and NetBSD 1.5.1 is due to FreeBSD's buffer cache growing
with available memory, which NetBSD 1.5.1 doesn't do.

You're creating 225 files of 128k size, which is some 28MB. The tarfile
will have about the same size, so if you can buffer 56MB, you're
in a good position. With 256MB, Linux and FreeBSD will do that,
NetBSD 1.5.1 will not (-current will).
